Dr. Benjamin Mbatia

Once a street child himself, Dr. Mbatia founded Edgel Mission in 2012 to give vulnerable children the same second chance he was given.
Early Life
Born in 1986, Dr. Mbatia grew up in extreme poverty in the slums of Eldoret. Raised by a single mother, his childhood was marked by homelessness, hunger and no access to education. Before the age of nine he had never attended school, until he was rescued and admitted to the Eldoret Children Rescue Centre.
Education
He completed primary school in Nakuru, graduated from Flamingo Secondary School, and earned a BA in Communication & Media and a Master’s in Journalism & Mass Communication from Egerton University. He later obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (University of Nairobi) and a PhD in Communication & Media Studies (Laikipia University).
Calling
Dr. Mbatia founded Edgel Mission out of a conviction to “pay forward” the kindness he received as a child.
“My journey from the slums to the classroom is a testimony of God’s grace and the generosity of people who chose to invest in one child’s future. Today, my life’s mission is to be that same source of hope for thousands of children facing similar circumstances.”
He is married to Virginia Wanjiru and together they are blessed with three children — Ethan, Bethan and Nathan.
