Our Target Group
Edgel Mission reaches out to vulnerable children living in informal settlements across Nakuru County, Kenya. Our primary focus is on orphans, abandoned and neglected children, those from extremely poor and disadvantaged families, and children living or at risk of living on the streets. We pay particular attention to children who lack adequate parental care, family support, access to education, basic healthcare and other essential needs.
We recognise that every child deserves an opportunity to grow, learn and realise their God-given potential, regardless of their family background or circumstances. Our work therefore extends beyond meeting immediate needs to providing a safe and supportive environment where children can experience love, dignity, belonging and hope for a better future.
Why We Exist and Serve in Nakuru
Nakuru is one of Kenya’s largest and fastest-growing urban centres, situated approximately 98 miles (158 kilometres) north-west of Nairobi, the country’s capital. Despite its growth and economic opportunities, the city is home to several informal settlements, including Kaptembwo, Bondeni and Kwa Rhonda, where many families continue to experience extreme poverty, unemployment, inadequate housing and limited access to essential services.
For many households, meeting even the most basic needs is a daily struggle. Children growing up in these circumstances are particularly vulnerable to neglect, exploitation and abuse. Some are exposed to hazardous environments at a very young age, where they are sent to scavenge through rubbish, broken glass and other potentially toxic waste in search of scrap metal and plastics to supplement their families’ meagre incomes. Others are forced into street vending, begging and other forms of child labour, often at the expense of their education, safety and childhood.
Without consistent parental care, education and a supportive family environment, some children gradually become disconnected from their homes and find themselves living on the streets. There, they face further exposure to violence, sexual exploitation, substance abuse, crime, homelessness and other forms of social exclusion. The absence of reliable support systems makes it increasingly difficult for them to break free from the cycle of poverty and vulnerability.
It is against this background that Edgel Mission exists. We believe that children should not be defined by the circumstances into which they are born or the hardships they encounter. Rather, with timely intervention, consistent care, education, mentorship and the love of Christ, they can be restored to hope and equipped to build meaningful and productive lives.
Through our programmes, we seek to address both the immediate and long-term needs of vulnerable children by supporting their education, providing food and basic necessities, facilitating access to healthcare, nurturing their talents and offering spiritual guidance and mentorship. Where possible, we also work towards strengthening family relationships and supporting children’s reintegration into safe family environments.
Our desire is to see every child given an opportunity to thrive, break the cycle of poverty and grow into a responsible, self-reliant and God-fearing member of society.
