Edgel Mission — Hygiene And Sanitation
Healthy children, safe communities

Children living in informal settlements often face challenges related to limited access to healthcare, clean water, sanitation and basic hygiene facilities. At Edgel Mission, we believe that children need more than education and food to thrive. They also need a healthy and safe environment in which to grow. Our Health and Sanitation Programme helps children and families develop healthy habits, access basic healthcare and understand how simple practices can prevent illness and protect their wellbeing.

Caring for Health

We provide basic medical care and treatment, health screening and regular check-ups, as well as first aid and emergency support when needed. Our programme also includes dental and oral health care, eye and vision screening, nutrition education and monitoring of children’s growth and wellbeing.

Where a child requires further attention, we support referrals to hospitals and health centres and work with local health professionals and healthcare facilities. We also provide health education and awareness on common illnesses, disease prevention, healthy habits and personal self-care.

Hygiene, Water and Sanitation

Good health also begins with a clean environment. We teach children practical personal hygiene, including proper handwashing, cleanliness and self-care. We provide soap and basic hygiene supplies and ensure that handwashing facilities are available at our programme centres.

Our sanitation activities include promoting safe drinking water and water treatment, proper use of toilets, responsible waste management and maintaining clean surroundings. We also organise community clean-up activities to encourage children and families to take responsibility for the cleanliness of their environment.

For girls, we provide menstrual hygiene education and support, helping them manage menstruation safely, confidently and with dignity.

Prevention, Care and Community Support

Our goal is not only to respond when children become sick, but also to help prevent illness before it occurs. Through health education, hygiene practices, nutrition awareness and disease-prevention activities, we equip children and families with knowledge they can apply in their everyday lives.

We also support families during health emergencies and work with local health professionals and facilities when specialised care is needed. Through practical care, education and prevention, we seek to help children grow healthier, safer and more confident — while encouraging families to build cleaner and healthier communities together.
